PEDAL power turned a handy £6,100 for charity as a father and son completed their epic 997-mile Lands End to John O’Groats (LeJog) ride.
Caldicot estate agents Andy Reeks, 63, and son Nathan, 35, managed to ride from the bottom to the top of the country in 12 days in aid of St David’s Hospice Care.
Nathan said: “The toughest part of the journey was definitely the early parts in Devon and Cornwall. It was very hilly and very warm too.
“We kept thinking, when it got hard, about all the money we have raised that will help St David’s Hospice Care and that got us through it.
“We have currently raised £6,100 and there are still some monies coming in.
“Reaching the Scottish border was an amazing feeling, but there was still a long way to go with six days of cycling in Scotland.
“When we arrived at John O’Groats, we were overjoyed and we did get a little emotional because we had made it all this way as a team, with our support driver, cook and route planner, Ian Waite, and without even a puncture.”
He added: “I would for sure be up for another challenge, but we need to let the bodies recover now, and just sit back and enjoy the memories of an epic trip.”
On their way, the duo took a slight detour to call into their home town, Caldicot, where they were greeted by supporters.
At the time, Andy, the president of Caldicot Running Club, said: “It’s been tough. The second day was the hardest with all the hills, one after the other. And the heat: it was 30C on the second day.”
Andy and Nathan, who is the chairman of the running club set off on their gruelling ride on Wednesday, July 3, and arrived at John O’Groats on Sunday, July 14, and stayed for free at Caravan and Motorhome Club sites along their route north.
Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “This is a phenomenal achievement for Nathan and Andy. We can’t thank them enough for their support and we are looking forward to welcoming them back to the hospice soon.”
Although the Reeks have now completed their journey, donations can still be made in person at their Nathan James Estate Agents’ office, or online using their Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/nathan-reeks
