I INSTANTLY recognised the postcard/photograph from the Brian Clutterbuck collection which was in the Review dated August 30 as a trip which was organised by Kit Shuttleworth the landlord of the New Buildings public house at Forest Green (near Howle Hill) which is where the photograph is taken.
The date was 1946, nearly all our neighbours and friends went on the two Edwards buses. The one driver was Sid Jones in white coat far left, I don't know who the other driver was. The buses were loaded with crates of beer or cider before we set off and it wasn't very long before we had to stop for a drink and snack.
I have a photograph of one of our stops. I am not sure if many noticed the scenery after the first few stops. Of course it was a celebration of the end of the war.
I can recognise most of the people in the photograph – my two uncles, Fred and Reg Morgan, with their wives and families. The local postman, Mr Harris and his wife, Mrs Price and her son Fred, Mr and Mrs Stan Harris and family, Mrs Counly and son Terry and Mr and Mrs Rosser and daughter Margaret are among some I recognise.
Older people in those days were never called by their Christian names.
I was a very young teenager, unfortunately very few of these wonderful characters are with us to share my memories.
If anyone would be interested to know more about the photograph please contact me I am in the back row centre of picture – Margaret Wilce née Morgan.
