FOR certain it's the longest scarf in the Forest, probably the longest in Gloucestershire and it may even be the best in Britain – and it could be yours for 50p if you go along to Mitcheldean's carnival on Saturday week.
This woolly wonder is the creation of pensioner Dorothy Sandford, of Eastern Avenue, Mitcheldean, who has spent some time every day since May 8 knitting the scarf.
"I usually knit them to go abroad, but this time I thought I would do one to raise funds towards the cost of the repairs of the church spire," said Mrs Sandford.
To win this marvel of natty needlework all you have to do is guess its length – and its growing by the day!
Mrs Sandford has enlisted the help of local shopkeepers who are offering prizes to help swell the knitter-kitty and she wants to thank all her friends who have donated wool.
"I have bought wool from charity shops and even unravelled jumpers – but that often takes longer to do than to knit it up. I try to do a bit every day and often some at night when I have been unable to sleep so I sit and watch the television and knit at the same time," she said.
For now husband Joe has the task of winding the eight inch wide wonder work onto a huge spool. It will be revealed in its full glory on carnival day when the guesswork is up to you!
