SEVERAL months back when the discussions about cross-border healthcare started I stated that I was waiting to have an operation at Southmead Hospital in Bristol but because I live in Sedbury and have a Welsh-based GP I had to wait for Welsh funding which was turned down as I didn't fit their criteria, although I did for Bristol.
I appealed and on July 1 got a letter saying the funding had been approved due to 'exceptional circumstances' but then goes on to tell me I will now be seen at Morriston Hospital, Swansea.
I have asked them to clarify this as it was Bristol that applied for the funding and I live in England but as to date I have not received a response.
How on earth is this patient care? Apart from the delay in getting the operation, as it is a year since the funding was applied for, going to Swansea isn't practical. I will need to be at the hospital for 7.30am on the morning of the operation and hope there has been no emergencies through the night which means a bed is not available. I will be in for several days so should I actually have any visitors they are going to have to spend several hours travelling not to mention the journey I will have to do when I've been discharged and finally Swansea has no idea of my medical history.
While hospitals do share some information via their computer system this is not always reliable even in hospitals within the same health trust let alone different countries.
It is purely about money and the situation is only going to get worse if the NHS becomes privatised
