REGARDING the letter in last week's Review about the flowers in Lydney.
I will grant that Lydney tried and had a great improvement on previous floral displays but they still have a long way to go to match the Welsh town of Chepstow – alive with colour and floral displays throughout the main street and side streets.
Plenty of seats to sit on to admire the flowers – wonderful.
Lydney used to have so much going for it – the entrance to the Forest, busy little shops such as Williams and Cottons, Star (later George Mason), Co-op, Fine Fare for all grocery needs.
Villagers came from everywhere to shop in Lydney but those days have long gone.
At 2.30pm Lydney might as well close the shops as there are so few people around whereas Chepstow is teeming with people in the coffee houses, tea shops and restaurants which are always full and hotels in the main street serving excellent cuisine.
During the summer months there is so much going on with Morris dancers, bands playing and buskers and the pavements have interesting plaques.
Chepstow also has a good library, an excellent museum and, of course, further out the racecourse, excellent for a good day out on race days.
I love Lydney but after all my 90 years I do wonder what will happen in 20 years.
Each group of councillors seems to change its mind about what to do – have some 'surgeries' and ask Lydney people.
Incidentally, my great-great nephew goes to Chepstow every weekend to discos and dances with about 30 other chaps.
– Frustrated, Lydney.
