THE snow hit the railway network and closed at least one line linking South Wales to Monmouth at the weekend. But it couldn't halt the town's first railway exhibition for years at the Leisure Centre.

Ten layouts were displayed, bolstered by a super show from the Wye Valley Railway Society, a variety of trade stands and an exhibition of the work of well known railway artist Eric Bottomley.

The event, organised by members of the town's Rotary Club, proved an outstanding success.

"It will definitely become an annual event. After expenses we are estimating a profit of around £1,300 all of which will be donated to local charities," said Rotarian David Forbes.

Mr Forbes said that layouts came from South Wales, Bristol and the Forest of Dean.

"There was one disappointment as, because of the snow, one club from South Wales were unable to make the trip. But everyone who attended enjoyed the occasion. We were asked if we would consider making it a two-day show but it's early days. One thing for certain is that it will become an annual event," said Mr Forbes.
