THE timing of the proposed cut in tolls on the Severn bridges could have a big impact on motorists, says Newport East MP Jessica Morden.
Chancellor George Osborne announced that the tolls would be reduced by 50 per cent in 2018, the year the crossings revert to public ownership.
Tolls currently include 20 per cent VAT but the tax will be removed when the bridges are publicly owned, said Ms Morden, whose constituency includes Caldicot.
The Labour MP said: "VAT has to come off the tolls because the bridges become publicly owned in 2018, so clarity is needed about whether the announced cut is pre or post the removal of VAT.
"It is important because this could mean the difference between a toll of £3.40 or £2.80 for a car. I will be looking closely at the detail."
She said she welcomed the reduction in tolls which would help her constituents.
