A FOREST woman who has been crippled with ill health – including rheumatoid arthritis – for more than 30 years says art has given her a new lease of life.

Carole Goodhall, of Lydney, has been attending weekly classes at Art Space in Cinderford since last September.

The mum-of-two says the Review’s recent story of Olive Howley from Viney Hill whose speech returned with the help of art spurred her to get in touch.

She said: “I wanted to get in touch about how art has acted as therapy for me and then I saw [Olive’s] story and it confirmed more people could benefit.

“I’ve had many issues with my health for several years, but a particular relapse last July was due to the discs in my back hitting the sciatic nerve. I was completely doubled over. It has taken almost a year to stand upright.

“My daughter insisted at the time I took up art and, as a mother you don’t want to let your children down, so I booked myself onto the children’s illustration course at Art Space.

“Getting to and sitting in the class was a huge challenge but it’s fun and friendly. The class helped change my mindset, delving into my creative side, and setting goals at a time when I had more or less given up.

“Members share experiences and we reflect on our achievements. I can see a future now, I am making plans. My future most certainly will include art.”

The 55-year-old added: “I was hoping to go back this September, but I am due to go on the pain management course with Gloucestershire Royal Hospital so may not be able to return until next January. I truly appreciate what they have done for me, and want to get others to think about trying it. Art has definitely helped me but also Art Space needs to be known for what they do – they are far more that an art class.”
