A RENAULT Clio motor car, a weekend break in the Scilly Isles, 500 litres of heating oil and a guided tour of the House of Commons are among the attractions at an auction of promises.

The event, on Saturday March 16 at 7pm at the Mackenzie Hall, Brockweir, is in aid of the Brockweir and Hewelsfield village shop and playing field project.

In all there are more than 50 lots to go under the hammer and most can be previewed from noon to 4pm on the day of the auction.

The village lost its only shop and post office two years ago and needs funds to create a new shop, community centre and playing field.

Chairman of the Village Shop Association Alan Clarke said: "Local businesses have give us every encouragement with out auction.

"Overross Garage at Ross on Wye has come up trumps with a Renault Clio, the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Driving Instructors' Association has supplied driving lessons and Beale Garage at Coleford have added an MOT. We're in the driving seat and set for a great night!"

The virtually endless list continues with the offer of a team of gardeners to bring your garden up to scratch, a pair of top-class binoculars from Monk Optics, reflexology and yoga lessons.

And there's Sunday lunch for two at Speech House, an evening meal for four at the Brockweir Inn, or bed and breakfast at Monmouth's historic Punch House.

Everyone is welcome – it's not just for locals, say the organisers.

Admission is £1 on the door and there is a licensed bar, with Gwilym Richards of William Parry Richards taking the bids.
