I AM writing to ask you to publish this letter congratulating The Midcounties Co-operative on their excellent Community Fund.

In Littledean we have been fundraising to add funds to those available from the parish council to erect additional Christmas lights in the village.

I approached Cinderford Co-op to ask if they could offer a discount on refreshments for a community event to raise funds.

The manager readily agreed to offer a discount on provisions but enquired about the purpose of the fundraising. When I explained this was to enhance the village he alerted me to the possibility of an award from the Community Fund set up to return money back to the community. In addition, employees volunteer hours within the community and can provide 'hands on' help.

I applied with little hope of a successful outcome and was delighted to receive £250 towards costs. In the current climate with such negative publicity about large stores I feel it is important that positive stories are highlighted.

I hope this may be published as it underlines how important it is to work in partnership to improve local communities.
