In the 1800s the spectacular octagonal church in the centre of the town was removed.

In the 1960s the fine characterful town hall was flattened. I understand this was gifted to the town.

All this as far-sighted towns such as Ross and Tetbury and no doubt, several others were retaining theirs.

There are rumours that St John’s Church is to go the same way.

The latest is the plan to knock down the old council offices  as well. A building, in my view, of some architectural merit.

Will there be any historical interest left in the town for future generations?

I think that Coleford, West Dean is a strong contender as the demolition capital of West Gloucestershire. – John Ricketts, ex-pat, now Stow on the Wold.
