I WAS interested to read Mr Graham's letter regarding the Co-op.

I was born in Pillowell, and my mother always did her shopping at the Co-op which was then at Pillowell. Every week a horse and wagon called at home with various things but what I remember mostly was bringing paraffin. No electric then, it was oil lamps.

The horse was black and, I think, called 'Black Bess.' I can still remember my mother saving all the receipts and adding it all up ready for 'divi day.'

One day in the year there was a carnival and we had a lovely tea supplied while the band played. It was always a lovely sunny day, or so it seemed. Those were the days! – Barbara York, Seymour Close, Berry Hill.
