THE names of pubs, garages and other businesses can often be seen on the shirts of local sports teams – but now they have been joined by a council.
The name of Coleford Town Council is now emblazoned on the shirts of the Forest of Dean Ladies’ under-16s football side.
The club, which also has a senior team, applied for a grant from the council and received a total of £1,200.
Part of the agreement is that the award is publicised so the council’s contribution is recognised on the shirts.
As well as the kit, the grant will also enable the club, which plays home matches at Ellwood, to buy other equipment.
Mayor of Coleford, Cllr Paul Kay presented the shirts to the side at their training session at the Dean Academy in Lydney.
Manager Beccy Saunders said: “There is a lot of interest in women’s football and we’ve also got under-14s and under-12s.
“We approached the town council and we were very pleased when they agreed to give us the grant.”
Cllr Kay said: “We have a grants scheme to help people and groups in Coleford.
“A lot of the people in the club are from Coleford so we were able to help.
“I’m very pleased that there is so much interest in the club and hopefully we will see it develop further.”
