THE County Council has objected to the Review's story last week about protesters occupying the Wilderness Centre at Plump Hill and says there are inaccuracies that need to be addressed.
The council says that last Tuesday's granting of an injunction disallowed the intention of a group of squatters to hold what they term a 'spring gathering' at the site, and anyone who now attempts this will be breaking the law.
It was not the intention of the injunction to remove the group, as stated by the Review, for which the council already has permission.
Holding the edition past our deadline, the Review reported from sources at the site that bailiffs were expected at any moment but were apparently held up by an administrative hitch. Not true, said the council, which later served notice on the group as instructed by the court.
Gloucestershire County Council said there was an inference that they had paid for a circling helicopter at the incident but this was also untrue and trouble should have been taken to check this and also seek comment from the council, which had a right to reply on the situation.
The council says there is no question that the group occupying the site are squatters, and they have no connection with Friends of the Wilderness as claimed in the report. Also Cllr Gardiner, who was speaking in defence of the group, hasn't mentioned that his grandson is actually one of the squatters.
Council director Andrew McCartney said: "We're pleased the court has found in our favour on all accounts, that includes an injunction preventing the planned Reclaim the Fields spring gathering from going ahead.
"We will now be working with the court bailiffs and the police to take the next steps and remove the squatters from the site.
"We hope that they will adhere to this order and leave the site peacefully as promised."
We are pleased to publish Gloucestershire County Council's objections.
