A MAP dating back to 1840 caught people's eye at the Awre annual village fete.

The map of the old village fields was among many things that provided people of all ages an afternoon of fun on Saturday (September 14).

For 50p children tried to pinpoint where hidden treasure was buried on the map while those old enough reminisced about how the small fields were before they merged to make larger ones.

Organiser, Ursula Cross said: "The map has names of all the fields and it proved fascinating as there have been many changes over the years, but interestingly local farmers still refer to fields by name and the loss of orchards is evident too."

The event which raises money for the maintenance of the village hall fetched £828 this year. There were a variety of stalls including homemade cakes, a barbecue serving up locally-sourced meat and music by young members of Pillowell Silver Band. Meanwhile, the fun continued as children guessed the weight of Boris the cockerel and rolled a straw bale.

Ursula added: "We had a great afternoon and everybody had lots of fun. We raised an astonishing amount for the hall which is pretty good considering we are a small village. We are very grateful for the support."
