CRICKET has traditionally been one or our favourite sports, but some grass root clubs are struggling to recruit players and put out teams.

Ruardean Hill Cricket Club have seen the decline in player numbers first hand, and are trying to reverse the trend by hosting a four-week free indoor coaching course for children aged nine to 13.

Sunday and midweek captain, Adam Cole, said: “We used to have a full fixture list on Sundays, but nowadays we have possibly four or five matches.”

And putting football in the firing line for hitting cricket numbers, he added: “The football season now overlaps at the beginning and end of the cricket season. This didn’t used to happen.

“The knock-on effect is that most players who play both sports will prioritise football and then usually have a break from cricket.”

Another major reason for the decline is that schools no longer promote cricket to the extent they used to.

Current first team captain, Robbie Moore, said: “I get upset driving past my former school cricket ground these days.

“Replacing our once well-kept pitch are now some flats. The school doesn’t even play cricket anymore.”

Ruardean Hill CC are now looking to promote the game again to the younger generations.

Club president Dave Elsmore said: “I have so many fond memories from my cricket playing days and so many friendships that have lasted for decades.

“Clubs like ours have to do something to ensure cricket remains a major sport now and into the future.”

The club are offering an initial four-week indoor coaching course for children aged nine to 13.

“We want to show the local kids that there is more than football and rugby,” Mr Cole added.

“Our taster course is free and available to both boys and girls, so please get in touch and come along.”

Ruardean Hill CC also confirmed they have entered a competitive junior league and will also offer junior coaching throughout the season.
