PARKEND may have off field problems, but youngsters are flocking to the village in droves to take part in weekly cricket sessions.
Every Thursday as many as 50 take part in practice nets on the Rec – and more are welcome, says coach Jon Deave.
Jon has a squad of 16 boys who regularly attend nets for the under 13s.
The weather has hampered progress so far and they have played just one game, losing by eight runs to Ruardean Hill in the West of Severn League. The team has kit supplied by Red Chilli Catering and Jon says a number of the team show real ability.
At under 15 level Parkend has linked up with Ruardean Hill to form Parkhill, a joint venture set to benefit both clubs.
Parkhill play in the Gloucester under 15 league and thanks to the support of The Woodman inn at Parkend they have the use of a mini-bus to travel to away games.
For Thursday evening training youngsters aged from eight upwards converge on Parkend.
"They are really keen and enthusiastic. It is very encouraging for the future of cricket to see so many young players involved," said Jon.
