A CONTRACTOR was expected to be appointed this week to begin work on a new drainage scheme for Lydney's Recreation Trust Ground.

The start – possibly as early as next week – cannot come quickly enough for the town's cricket and football clubs.

Both have said their futures were threatened unless the work was carried out immediately.

Cricket club secretary Andrew Davis was a relieved man on Tuesday.

"Trust members met on Monday and I'm pleased to say I have now been told a contractor will be appointed immediately," he said.

Mr Davis said it was vital the ground was fit for cricket by May 1.

"We lost so many games last season. There was a real threat to the club's future as we play at a standard that demands far more than a cowfield and I'm delighted that that has been recognised by the Trust," he said.
