A ROAD in Lydney is set to be closed from Monday (October 15) for two months for work to stop landslips.

The Driffield Road closure follows the closure of parts of the Wye Valley Road, linking Monmouth and Chepstow, for 10 weeks to prevent further rock falls.

Driffield Road in Lydney will be closed between Tree Tops and Highfield Lane from October 15 to December 10 for crews to put soil nails and rock netting into the embankment to halt landslips.

Crews successfully used the same methods further down the road in 2010 where another landslip had occurred, and the latest repair work will help keep the route “safe for years to come”, said a Gloucestershire highways spokesman.

Access for residents in the extended closure area will be maintained from the north of Driffield Road.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Landslips are often challenging from an engineering point of view, but we know this method worked in 2010.

“The work will take some time, but will make sure the road is safe long into the future. I’d like to thank residents for their patience during the closure.”

Letters have gone out to residents along the route with details about local access arrangements.

Meanwhile, the A466 Wye Valley route between Redbrook and St Arvans has been closed to through traffic until Monday, December 3, while crews scale back fractured embankment rock just north of Bigsweir Bridge.

A Gloucestershire highways spokesman said the rock embankment is crumbling and falling onto the road below, which could cause a major accident.

Temporary two-way traffic lights and concrete barriers were installed in the centre of the road last January to protect the single running lane, but now a round-the-clock closure will be in place for loose rock and soil to be removed, before the embankment is netted and pinned to prevent future falls.

Cllr Vernon Smith, county council cabinet member for highways and flood, said: “In the interest of public safety, it is necessary to close this road while our crews undertake the dangerous task of scaling back the fractured rock.

“I understand the closure is going to cause inconvenience for drivers and local businesses, but this work is significant and much-needed to ensure local residents and visitors from outside of the county remain safe on Gloucestershire’s roads.”

A two-week overnight 7pm to 7am road closure on the A48 at Minsterworth has also been announced for resurfacing from Monday (October 15) to Wednesday, October 31.

A diversion will opearate using the A4151, the B4226, the B4227 and the A4151 before joining the A4136 at Nailbridge, via Plump Hill, Mitcheldean and Longhope to the junction with the A40.
