STUDENTS at a Forest School have teamed up with the local Women's Institute and a church to help girls in Uganda.

Sixth formers at Wyedean School are working with Tutshill WI and Chepstow Baptist Church on the Girls At School (GAS) project, helping Orungo High School in Uganda.

Wyedean students are learning to make feminine hygiene kits which will enable female students at Orungo to continue with their studies through their periods.

Isla Arendell, the school's pastoral support manager, said: "Girls miss up to three months of school a year because of a lack of adequte feminine hygiene.

"Wyedean is working with Tutshill WI to help girls stay in school and retain dignity by empowering girls, women and their community to access quality sustainable feminine hygiene."

Students from Wyedean will be visiting Uganda next month where they will teach the girls of Orungo to make the kits themselves to set up their own cottage industry.

A sale of cakes made by Wydean staff raised £171 to buy materials for the project and there is a fund-raiser planned for this Saturday (June 29) with a fish and chip supper and Family Fortunes quiz at Chepstow Baptist Church at 7pm.
