IT looks as if the filming of a major movie by giants Paramount at Lancaut, near Tidenham, could go ahead if no major objections emerge.

A report to the Forest of Dean District Council, which is considering an application for change of use of the land in the Lancaut peninsula, in a fold of the Wye, shows no substantial objection so far.

This would involve the construction of prefabricated film sets representing a medieval village, a castle and abbey foundations, and the company has said local labour and film extras would be employed.

One estimate says the company could spend upwards of £5million in the area during the shooting of the movie 'Timeline'.

However the council is still waiting for comments from Tidenham Parish Council, the County Surveyor, the Environment Agency, English Heritage, the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and farming interests before its May 2 meeting.

The county archaeologist has raised no objection but has asked to be consulted by the film-makers over the use of ancient monuments, while the Wye Valley AONB wants steps to make sure no harm is done and things return to normal, a view shared by the Lower Wye Valley Preservation Society.

The report to the council says the applicants would wish to be on the site for between six and eight weeks.

Access to the site would be from the B4228 along a single-track road which terminates at Lancaut Farmhouse, where temporary access to the filming area would have to be constructed.

Members of the Forest of Dean District Council Planning (Development Control) Committee have visited the site.
