THE traditional village fete at English Bicknor raised thousands of pounds for charity.

There was music from the Monmouth Town Band and Forest drumming group Djabot and plenty of competitions.

Waffle the calf was back at the fete – last year they were looking for a name, this year the challenge was to guess her weight.

Jamie Elsmore was closest to Waffle’s actual weight of 44.5 stone or a whopping 282kgs.

Sue Manser went home happy after winning a barrow of booze – which included the wheeled helper which was donated by builders’ merchants Travis Perkins.

Danny Dunkley, who has a Wild West-inspired saloon at his home in Berry Hill brought along a horseshoe tossing game and also invited people to guess his weight.

Sharon Shelbourne of Bicknor Bears nursery took up her usual position and invited youngsters to soak the teacher.

“I’ve been doing it for 10 years and they seem to enjoy it,” she admitted.

Among the attractions at the fete on a hot summer Saturday were displays by the Herefordshire Aero Club, while Eric Warden Heggie brought along a Thomas the Tank Engine railway layout based on a princess castle.

It is estimated that the fete raised more than £3,000 for groups in the village.
