NEWLAND Parish Council has become the first council in the south west to dedicate outdoor recreational space in memory of those who died during World War One.

The council has put forward Clearwell Recreation Ground to be safeguarded through the national charity Fields in Trust, as a centenary field.

Centenary Fields is a programme in partnership with the Royal British Legion to mark the centenary of World War One.

The parish council can dedicate space to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives during the conflict, as well as ensure future generations have valuable green space to enjoy as a living legacy.

Newland Parish Council Chairman, John James said: "We, together with the recreation ground management committee, are delighted to have this opportunity from Fields in Trust and the Royal British Legion to mark the centenary of World War One in this unique way.

"Protecting Clearwell Recreation Ground means that there is always somewhere to remember the sacrifices, but also to enjoy the fresh air and the surroundings."

Fields in Trust chief executive, Helen Griffiths added: "I congratulate Newland Parish Council for being the first of what we hope will be many others in the south west to protect memorial spaces as Centenary Fields.

"This programme is a fitting way for us to mark the sacrifices made by so many while looking to the future through a living remembrance. We look forward to many more landowners following their lead."
