FOREST pupils are gearing up for a six-month battle to get to the final of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust's Annual Primary Schools Wildlife Quiz - but there's still time to get involved!
With a week to go the Trust is putting out a last call for schools, parents and governors to get their children involved. Last year 115 county schools took part involving some 700 children.
With children spending less time outdoors and becoming less connected with nature, there has never been a more important time to forge strong links between the adults of tomorrow and the environment and wildlife which will need their protection in the future.
"Taking part in the Quiz is a fantastic opportunity for children to learn more about and engage with the environment," says Margaret Westmore, the Trust's primary schools officer. "Teams represent their school but can be coached by parents, governors, or others with the school's approval."
There's still time to get involved, as teams need to represent the school so a teacher needs to 'sponsor' the entry.
Entirely run by volunteers, over the past 37 years the wildlife quiz has helped connect children with the natural world and their environment, even influencing children that went on to work in conservation, such as Neil Lodge.
"I distinctly remember the quizmaster showing us small tortoiseshell caterpillars which were fascinating," said Neil, who is currently working for Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. "It was a turning point in my life... and that's where my enthusiasm for wildlife stemmed from."
