PC Dyer, 53, is retiring after first joining the force back in 1976, when he left the Army.
"He's such a terrific bloke we thought we couldn't let him go without letting the rest of the world know what we think of him," said a member of the Coleford staff who did not want to be named.
"He is very very popular throughout the force and with the communities he has worked in. Even the criminals look up to him with respect."
PC Dyer came originally from Leominster, but applied to Gloucestershire Police when he was looking for a job after the Army. He first served in Cheltenham and came to the Forest in 1978, thereafter serving in Lydbrook, Tutshill and Coleford, where he has been policing the St Briavels area.
"My mother came from Gloucester so I have a connection with the area," he told the Review.
"I have been here a while now so I'm getting to know my way around."
He said he would certainly miss policing, "although it isn't the job it used to be these days. It has changed a lot".
PC Dyer plans to take on some postal work on his retirement and he will be staying on at his Coleford home. He has a wife and two grown up daughters.
