WOOLASTON Primary School pupil Gabriella Hughes and her granddad are the dream team when it comes to growing sunflowers.

Since planting the giant sunflower seeds in late spring, the pair have closely watched its progress and were surprised to see one has reached 11 feet.

The Year Six pupil said: “We planted five seeds (in my grandad’s back garden) and all are now huge sunflowers but this one is by far the tallest at nearly 11 feet. We are going to save some of the seeds for next year and hope to get an even bigger sunflower if this is possible.

“We have been worried with the winds so had to stake three times with even larger stakes. The flower is so big and heavy it has attracted lots of bees. I love gardening with my granddad and helping with his vegetables.”
