A FOREST woman who suffered a serious eye injury after a car accident in 2002 is hosting a fundraiser for the charity that helped her on the road to recovery.

Andrea Smith, of Coleford, was aged just 22, when her Citroen Saxo collided with a 32-tonne tipper truck in Bream Avenue leaving her with nerve damage to both eyes and severe double vision.

It was feared that the now 36-year-old would never drive again, watch the television or read a book. But after 14 years, and surgery in 2012, she can do it all.

To thank the Gloucestershire Eye Therapy Trust (GETT) that helped her, Andrea has organised a fundraising sale of Christmas decorations and gifts this Saturday (October 22).

Andrea said: “Since 2012 I have raised more than £50,000 for many small charities but now purely support GETT.

“I constantly fundraise for GETT and in June a new ophthalmology ward in Cheltenham hospital was opened which is the best in the UK.

“Over the year I have been donated Christmas decorations and gifts and am holding an event to help raise more vital funds for GETT. The money will help them with research and buy essential equipment to treat many eye disorders.

“I have fought hard over 14 years and face a future of deterioration in injuries as I have a fused ankle to ‘fix’ severe arthritis and will always need help to keep my eyes under control. This is why I do so much fundraising.”

The event will be held at Salvation Army Broadwell between 11am and 3pm. Refreshments available.
