A WEEKLY art session has been set up to give patients living with a range of health needs the chance to learn a new skill, try something fun and meet new people in a 'safe space'.

The sessions, which are part of the Gloucestershire Art Lift project, are held in Blakeney Village Hall on Tuesdays between 1pm and 3pm and funded by NHS Gloucestershire. It provides GP's and health professionals with an option to prescribe 10 free art sessions to help improve people's overall wellbeing whether physical or emotional.

Professional artist, Nichola White from Cinderford has introduced printmaking to patients. She said: "Those who are referred to the project include people living with stress, anxiety, low self-esteem or chronic pain, as well as those who need to improve social networks, or need support following a loss or a major life change.

"Printmaking is an exciting and engaging way of being part of a creative process that does not rely on needing competent drawing skills. It allows a freedom of expression that uses colour, shape, texture and pattern to create unique handmade prints on a variety of papers that are made with the use of a etching press.

"Patients so far have found this informal approach to making pictures very uplifting and comment on how the process itself becomes a therapeutic activity that allows them to relax, enjoy and consequently improve their confidence and self-esteem.

"What's great is that the artwork made during the sessions are on display in Blakeney GP surgery."
