LYDNEY railway station could expand its car park and facilities.

Discussions are ongoing between local councils and Network Rail to allow the possible expansion of facilities at the major transport link which connects people from the Forest both on the Gloucester to Newport line, and its extensions further afield.

The news comes as the town recently secured £1million of Growth Deal funding from central government for the Lydney Transport Strategy, which the train station is a key part of.

Forest MP Mark Harper said he is optimistic that the future is bright for the railway station.

He said: "For too long, Lydney railway station car park has been overcrowded, and in need of expansion. "I have been working on resolving this problem for a number of years, though progress has been slow going. I am glad that now, working together, our Conservative-controlled district and county councils, with Network Rail, have found a possible solution to this longstanding problem.

"This news comes just one week after Lydney also received a commitment of £1million funding for its transport strategy thanks to money allocated by the government.

"Local infrastructure improvements like this are key parts of our long-term economic plan, aiming to boost economic growth both in Lydney and throughout the Forest."

County councillor, Alan Preest added: "The county council has acquired some land at the railway station which they say they are happy to man for two years, but would then want the town or district council to take on the responsibility. This idea is very much up in the air as there are many questions that need answering. But in general, this is a good thing for the town and I think it will encourage more people to use the train."
