GROUPS fighting proposed transmission masts in Pillowell and at Littledean Reservoir have pledged to fight on despite a major setback.

In the case of Littledean the results of a public inquiry is that Airwave has been granted planning permission for its installation with full costs awarded against the Forest of Dean District Council.

A spokesman for Airwave, an mmO2 service hoping to create an emergency services communications system across the county, said: "Airwaves welcomes this decision.

"The whole ethos of this system is to create safer communities by giving police the most up to date equipment to fight crime and protect the general public.

"All the evidence and arguments about health were fully debated over four days of this public inquiry.

"The inspector concluded that health fears of some within the local community about the replacement mast on this site are 'objectively unjustified' and that no 'impartial decision-maker would be able to arrive at the conclusion that there would be any real danger to health'.

"It is the third time in Gloucestershire that an independent inspector has concluded that there is no evidence of harm to health.

"We hope that the local community and local decision makers will be reassured by this consistent message."
