Newnham United 4 - Yorkley 0

THREE successsive league promotions and a string of exciting cup runs have earned Newnham a reputation as the local club to beat. As Yorkley will testify, it takes some doing!

"Yorkley were unlucky to ship four goals, but we did play very well in the second-half and took our chances," conceded Newnham secretary Roger Parrish.

Roger says Newnham are consolidating after three jumps up the league ladder.

"We are finding it more of a challenge in Division One but we are doing reasonably well and in the top half of the table. And we are still in the County Cup with two wins and a place in the third round next week," he said.

Stuart Handscombe has stood down as player-coach to concentrate on his game and Roger reports new coach Les Mayo has settled in well and is making the team tick.

"It's a big ask being a player-manager and Stuart did a great job but we understand his decision. We are lucky to have someone as experienced as Les Mayo to take his place," he said.

Yorkley enjoyed an excellent first-half and there was no score at the break. However, Mayo's interval talk put pep into Newnham's play and they were soon ahead as John White opened the scoring from close range.

An Adam Grech header put the Severnsiders further ahead and as the home forwards put the pressure on Yorkley's defence was opened up enabling Steve Grindle and James Kenny to wrap up a workmanlike performance.
