IT is a profound mistake by the Government to choose more nuclear energy to ease our relentless demand and meet our commitment to reduce emissions of CO2 by 2020.

The cost to our pocket and the environment will be immense. An estimated cost of between £80-200 billion to build, run and decommision and store waste, eventually paid for by us the taxpayer via subsidies or hikes in our energy bills. While human beings are fallible and prone to making mistakes nuclear materials are utterly unforgiving and never forget! Once leaked spilled or exploded into our environment their residues will cause illness and death for thousands of years. At this present moment the UK has 1,600 cubic metres of toxic nuclear waste that we don't know what to do with sitting waiting for a natural disaster or terrorist or, most likely, a mistake to happen.

At this time of global instability the last thing we need is to add to this legacy we leave our children and future generations.

Huge leaps in solar, wind and geothermal energy generation are making those a viable and real alternative. Currently Iceland the Phillipines and parts of California are benefiting from 20-30 per cent energy from geothermal where deep drilling technology has enabled the heat from natural uranium fission happening two to ten miles beneath our feet to be harnessed to surface power stations and with no fuel costs, no waste products, it would seem a common sense alternative choice, but, no, our Government's forté is not common sense they are listening to the vested interest and misguided science of the big energy giants and the need for nuclear from the defence and weapons industry. They will persuade our short-sighted politicians, planners and experts to lead a appethetic public, drunk on consuming, down a never ending and risky path much to the detriment and safety of our future. – Kevin Jones, Tuthill Cottages, Lydney.
