IT brings tears to your eyes, does onion yutting...ask any of the regulars at Whitecroft's Miners Inn, where they know well the side-effects...
Saturday saw the Forest Onion Yutting Contest return to the pub with a host of contenders trying to see who could eat the most raw onion.
But it takes more than raw nerve, said organiser Pat Topping, and she should know, coming from a famous onion-yutting family which saw off the opposition for the second year running.
Husband Dan walked away with top prize, eating a massive 28 oz. His rival, Sean Wozencroft, could manage only 22oz for second place, while Dan's son Jason, not to be outdone, came third with 18oz.
"It was an absolutely fantastic night and everyone had a great time...it was brilliant to watch, even if there were a few allegations of cheating with contestants trying to hid onion down their shirts," said Pat, who said she wanted to thank everyone involved..
There was a raffle with prizes donated by local firms, and the event raised a total of £608 for the Great Oaks Dean Forest Hospice.
