THREE former soldiers will be honoured by the French government at an event this weekend to commemorate what would have been the 95th birthday of heroine Violette Szabo.

Secret agent Violette Szabo, who was executed by the Nazis in France aged 23, was awarded Britain’s highest civilian honour, the George Cross, and the French Croix de Guerre for her bravery.

A museum and millennium green have been established at Wormelow near Ross where the commemoration will take place on Sunday afternoon (June 26).

Three members of the St Weonards Royal British Legion will be presented with medals for their part in the liberation of France in 1944.

Branch president Peter Davies, Jim Jenkins and Peter Harness will be presented with the Légion d’Honneur by a representative of the French consulate in Bristol.

The awards are being made to ‘recognise the selfless acts of heroism and determination displayd by the surviving veterans of the Normany Landings and the wider campaigns to liberate France in 1944’.

Rosemary Rigby, who runs the Violette Szabo GC Museum, said: “All are welcome to attend but we would particularly welcome members of the Royal British Legion.

“We would also welcome British Legion standard bearers who should meet at the park, opposite the Tump Inn at Wormelow for 1.30pm.”
