MRS Civil’s recent letter to you is typical of many written in support of Brexit in the run up to the referendum, in that it was high on passion but low on accuracy.
She begins by mis- quoting Churchill, then slides majestically downhill.
Everyone, from big business to the BBC, is not spared her conspiracy theory.
If what she suspects was true, it would be one of the greatest confidence tricks ever perpetrated by a government over its electorate.
If these same bodies were in support of the leave side of the argument, I am sure that Mrs Civil would have been singing their praises.
All through the campaign, we were told by Brexit that the most respected and professional public bodies were all part of a ruthless attempt to dupe the electorate.
Now that the referendum has been won, the most prominent Brexit Tories, are now pulling back from claims made in the campaign, like £350 million a week extra for the NHS.
We have already seen the reaction in the banks and financial markets, of which we were warned beforehand by the Bank of England among others.
There seems to have been no contingency plans in place to manipulate our exit from the EU.
Brexit Tories have also started to distance themselves from control of immigration, which is almost impossible in a global society and could mushroom into an ugly racism if we are not careful.
Perhaps the Tories have always intended to blame the immigration argument on UKIP anyway if Brexit was successful.
I don’t know about Mrs Civil’s accusations but this referendum could turn out to be one of the greatest con tricks of all time in that leave voters will feel hoodwinked by Brexit if their stance on immigration and extra money for the NHS is left behind by the new Prime Minister. – P Young, Chepstow.
