TEENAGED sisters from Bullo, near Newnham, raised £800 on Saturday for cancer charities at an event on Newnham Playing Fields in memory of their grandfather.

Bryony, 19, and Amyleigh Brice, 15, held the fun day in memory of Gerald Brice, from Newnham, who died last year of prostate and bone cancer at the age of 90.

Bryony said: “We were talking about what to do in Granddad’s memory and we tend to think the same thing at the same time, so we both had the idea together.

“We arranged for bouncy castles, fairground stalls, a dunk tank, skittles and music at the event and did everything ourselves, with support from our mum and step-dad and some of our friends on the day.

“It’s the first time we’ve done anything like this and, although we tried to get the message out, I think some people didn’t take us seriously as we’re so young. We’d have liked more people to come along on the day, but we’re very happy with how much money we raised for Prostate Cancer UK and the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

“The idea was also to raise awareness amongst men of this cancer, as they are often embarrassed and not very good at going to the doctor.

“Amy and I drove round everywhere ahead of the event to ask people to support us. We’d really like to thank those people who did take us seriously and who donated money or raffle prizes.”
