THE people of Mitcheldean have raised an amazing £20,000 since the launch of a £55,000 appeal to restore their church spire last May.

All that is needed is another £35,000 to fulfil the parish's matched funding commitment for the £180,000 repair costs being underwritten by English Heritage, said organiser Pat Nixon.

"Although this is a large figure it is not so daunting when viewed in the light of progress so far," she said.

"The fund-raising committee would like to say a big 'thank-you' to all who have supported the appeal since last May."

The ancient parish church is a grade 1 listed building of great architectural importance as well as a much-loved landmark.

It is hoped the work on the spire, which is suffering from corroded iron pinnings, can be completed within a year once the funding is in place.
