PLEASE talk ... that's the plea of smallholder Martin Yarworth who has been thrown out of his Newnham farm by a building society in a row over a disputed mortgage.

Talking to the Review outside his 'home' – a little green tent in a paddock at the rear of Underhill Farm at Ruddle – Mr Yarworth claimed that since the first day of the dispute the Portman Building Society has never spoken to him.

Mr Yarworth, 52, said he knew nothing of the mortgage taken out on the farm and claims his signature was forged.

"The building society has never spoken to me or negotiated with me. All I am asking is that they sit round a table and talk," he said.

Meanwhile Mr Yarworth says he is planning "drastic action" to try and draw attention to the plight of his flock of sheep, all heavily in lamb.

He has been ordered to remove them from the land but says he fears many of them would abort as they are close to lambing.

He said he believed an order had been obatained to remove the animals and this would be carried out at around mid-day on Wednesday of this week. He fears they could be sold or even culled under welfare rules.

Mr Yarworth again thanked local people and Forest MP Diana Organ for their support.

"I could almost cry when I stop and think of all those who have helped me. People recognise there has been an injustice and are doing all they can to help," he said.

Drastic action?

"I'm not sure what it will be, but I am considering a rooftop protest. I will do all I can to protect my sheep. At the very least they should be allowed to stay where they are at least until they have lambed around Christmas," he said.
