ANGLERS have reeled in their lines on the River Wye owing to low water levels killing fish.
Ross-on-Wye Angling Club has suspended fishing on the town stretch of the river after reports of ‘numerous’ dead fish over the past few weeks, following action from the Glamorgan Anglers Club, which controls fishing in Monmouth above the Wye Bridge.
Weed growth, sparked by the hot weather and low water, has reduced oxygen levels in the river, with salmon and barbel among the victims, say the clubs.
Notices have gone up on the river bank in Ross saying that the club committee has stopped all fishing on its waters from July 23 until further notice.
It adds: “We do not take this action lightly, but with hot weather and low de-oxygenated water set to continue, wer, have decided that we must put the conservation and welfare of all species of fish first.
“The suspension applies to all Ross AC waters and to members and those wanting to fish on day tickets.”
Spokesman Trevor Hyde said: “The move by the club is reflected up and down the river.
“Bailiffs will continue to patrol as usual and action may be taken against those who are found fishing during the period, which will end when the river and weather conditions are deemed to be back to normal.
Glamorgan AC stop-ped fishing in Monmouth on July 16.
