THERE was a moment of nervousness at the Christmas lights event in Caldicot when there was a brief delay between the switch being flicked and the lights coming on.

The large crowd gave a big cheer for the lights which were switched on by the town's mayor Cllr Alan Davies and his grandsons Bailey and Tarran Jones.

Among the guests was Newport East MP Jessica Morden and Assembly Member for the area John Griffiths.

Ms Morden said: "This is the ninth switch on in Caldicot that I've been to and it's probably the best."

The switch on is organised by the Caldicot Events Committee and included stalls run by local businesses and organisations, a fun fair and even a snow machine.

Among the performers entertaining the crowd were local school choirs, Serenata, a Caldicot-based choir, and the Caldicot Musical Theatre Society.

The mayor also selected dry cleaners Clean and Fresh as having the best seasonal theme.
