TWO young unsung heroes have been honoured by a town mayor for their selfless work in the community.
Brownie leader Harriet Till and army cadet Lance Corporal Joshua Prout were the first to receive the Mayor of Caldicot’s Cup.
Caldicot Town Council has introduced cups for the four main youth organisations in the town – Air Training Corps, Army Cadets, Guides and Scouts.
Town mayor Cllr Phil Stevens said: “It has been recognised by Caldicot Town Council that there are many young people in Caldicot who do a lot for the community that goes unnoticed.
“So we as a council have decided to recognise their services by awarding a trophy to the four main associations in Caldicot.”
Harriet, who is a sixth form student at Caldicot School, is a young leader with 2nd Caldicot Brownies and 1st Caldicot Rainbows and, outside Guiding, coaches youngsters in cricket, squash and hockey.
Cllr Stevens said: “She is a popular member of Caldicot Guides and follows the good principles laid out by the Guide Association – this alone makes her a good citizen of this town and someone we can all look up to.
“Harriet must be commended for her hard work and commitment to others.”
Joshua joined the army cadets in 2014 and has helped raise more than £1,000 in Caldicot for the British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Last November he was the main standard bearer for the Remembrance Day parade in Caldicot and last year he also headed the parade at Shirenewton for which he received the Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force’s highest award.
He has attended several training camps and has completed the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award.
Cllr Stevens said: “Lance Corporal Prout is a popular member of Caldicot Army Cadet Force and he helps and inspires new cadets, helping them to gain knowledge and confidence.”
