WITH reference to the photographs headed 'Let 'em roll!'
I can confirm that Letherens of Lydney did provide charabanc trips and, of course, a once daily bus service to Gloucester.
We used to go from the Bailey at Yorkley, walk through the woods and catch the bus from a point opposite what is now Mallards Pike.
The bus had travelled from Lydney, Whitecroft, Parkend and then proceeded to Gloucester where it parked in the Bell Hotel yard in Southgate Street.
The bus stayed in Gloucester until departure time which was five o'clock.
The return trip was uneventful until we reached Sparks Hill just past Bullo. It was not unusual for the passengers to get out and walk to the top of the hill as the bus could not negotiate what was then a much steeper gradient than today.
Reference the car, I recall travelling to Gloucester in such a vehicle as a lad. On one occasion we had to stop at the junction of the turning for Newent. The engine was boiling and the driver was aware of the adjoining horse trough which provided a supply of water and all was well again. – R.C. Paradise, Danby Close, Yorkley.
