NEWENT Onion Fayre’s Onion Show manager, Mike Davies, sure does know his… errr…vegetables after winning first prize at the Welsh Championships.

Hungry for more success, Mike is now off to Dundee in Scotland to compete in the National Vegetable Society’s National Championships.

With exhibitors coming from all over the UK, the standard is very high. He said: “There are five prizes awarded in each class and if I can even get fifth prize, I will be over the moon.”

The National Vegetable Society Welsh Branch Championships, held in Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire in August, awarded Mike first prize for his long carrots and parsnips.

Mr Davies has been on the Newent Onion Fayre committee for over 15 years.

This year’s event returns this Saturday (September 12) along with the onion show, world famous onion eating competition, over 140 stalls through the streets, live music, a food festival, a dog show, fairground rides and street entertainments.

This year the fayre celebrates its 20th anniversary with an evening event – ‘Onionfest – the after party’, which will feature a laser light show around Newent lake and a stage going out over the water with performances from The Beat, 3 Daft Monkeys and Nizlopi.
