AFTER making the front page of last week's Review, Sam Zala aka The Hulk, has noticed a surge in people jumping on her fundraising bandwagon.
The Bream lady has only been fundraising for three weeks but has already raised close to £2,000 – which doesn't account for the £8,801.23 people have donated on http://www.supportcharlie.org">www.supportcharlie.org.
Last Friday, Colefordians overtook Lydney in the generosity leader board as they donated, in just six hours, a fantastic £429.18. Meanwhile a further £92.81 was raised at Wyedean School during a cake sale the students held.
On Sunday, Sam was amongst people who took part at the Whitecross Sports Centre in a six-hour bike marathon. The three bikes, which teams of three people took in turns to ride, were full all day as spectators dropped in to offer their support.
She said: "The bike wheels only stopped turning when one person jumped off to allow for their team mate to jump on. We raised in total £101.56.
"I can't believe how supportive people have been towards my campaign to raise money for Charlie – it's completely overwhelming. I've had people come up to me in the street asking 'Are you the woman who has been dressing up as the hulk? I spotted your story in the Review'. The process has created a fantastic vibe in the Forest and I am so grateful for everybody's help and support."
Sam is one of several 'superheroes' on a mission to raise £25,000 for a five-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer from Sling. Charlie Mitchell relies on others to help him walk and unfortunately the operation that will enable him to walk pain-free is not currently funded under the NHS.
Organisers of the Wyedean Rally have picked up the fundraising baton and will have Charlie's logo feature on two cars during the race as well as donating some of the proceeds from the day and hold a charity evening.
While Duncan Roberts, who is Charlie's uncle, will lead 14 of his colleagues at Calico Interiors on a 195-mile sponsored bike ride from London to Paris in March. He hopes that the team will raise at least £5,000 during their two-day journey, and staff at Watts of Lydney are taking on a Three Peaks Challenge in April.
Sam is back collecting money on the streets dressed as The Incredible Hulk this Friday at Cinderford.
