HUNDREDS turned out to watch the crew of HMS Monmouth parade through the centre of the town with which it shares its name.

HMS Monmouth was given the freedom of the town which gives the crew the ceremonial right to parade through the town.

They paraded through the town from Cinderhill Street in the traditional style with bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying.

They marched up Monnow Street to Castle Hill where they were met by local dignitaries including the Mayor of Monmouth, Cllr Graham Pritchard and the High Sheriff of Gwent Mr Andrew Tuggey.

The commanding officer of HMS Monmouth, Commander Philip Tilden, said they were “immensely proud” to exercise their freedom of the town.

He added: “Our servicemen and women appreciate all the support they receive in Monmouth.”

A cheque for £640 raised by the crew was presented to the mayor for his charity appeal.
