COMMUTERS throughout our area should prepare for 'major changes' in the bus timetables – as operators Stagecoach West implement a review of 'most bus routes' around the Forest and Wye Valley.
The revelation of the extent of the changes that are to be brought in first came to light when concerned passengers reported to the Review that there were plans for radical alterations to the timetable for the 24 service, which runs from Ross on Wye, through Lydbrook and Mitcheldean, and then to Gloucester.
This major commuter service was said to be under review by the company, but in response to enquiries, a more concerning picture emerged - that the service from Ross to Joys Green was to be axed entirely. And, following more detailed questioning, the company policy over buses in the area revealed that 'most' bus routes and services in the area are to undergo radical changes.
In a statement, a Stagecoach West spokesperson said: "During the past few months we have been undertaking a major review of the bus network in the Forest of Dean and Ross on Wye area, and those routes that link to Gloucester and Hereford. We have also been analysing ticket machines data and carrying out roadside surveys. Some routes are very popular and are carrying more and more passengers, however some journeys are much less busy. We have also been reviewing suggestions from customers and our staff in addition to checking on which routes need their times adjusting to fit with current traffic congestion.
"As a result of this review, from Sunday March 30 2014, there will be major changes to most bus routes and timetables throughout the area."
Commenting specifically about the 24 service, the statement continues: "As a result of very low usage, buses will no longer operate on this route between Joy's Green and Ross on Wye. This section of route is still served by Route 35. The timetable has been significantly altered throughout the day as a result of this route change."
Other changes include: Earlier first and late services on the 30/31 service from Gloucester to Cinderford and Coleford, a new 34 service, linking Ross on Wye and Monmouth, via Goodrich, additional morning peak service on the 24 from Joys Green to Gloucester, arriving in the city at 8.50am, and an 'improved' 30 minute service on the 32/132 service from Gloucester to Highnam/ Newent.
Passengers are said to be 'furious' over the scale of the changes, with one, who did not wish to be named, telling the Review: "It's only been two years that we have had a useful bus service through the north of the Forest. People have come to rely on the 24 – and some gave up owning a car entirely when they could commute by bus. This is a real blow. It's very sad that the same problems could be affecting other routes too – don't Stagecoach understand the need for a regular, frequent and reliable service to our work and schools?"
She added: "They crowed a lot about giving the area ten new buses last year – but what was the point in that if they are just going to axe the services, or drastically reduce them?"
