THE latest book in a series of photographic records of the Blaisdon community has received a Royal seal of approval.
'Blaisdon Memories of the New Elizabethans 1964-2012' is dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Stephen Waters, author of the work which contains more than 1,100 pictures contributed by 150 past and present parish residents, says: "In this Jubilee year, the village of Blaisdon is honoured that Her Majesty the Queen has allowed the book to be dedicated to her.
"Having received a copy of the earlier volume, she has instructed that it be placed in the Royal Library at Windsor."
Most people living in Blaisdon have only known one monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, and the years covered by this volume reflect life in a small country parish during the majority of her reign.
"Blaisdon is a small community with a wealth of social history. The middle years of the 20th century were explored in Volume 2 through the memories of those who lived in Blaisdon. Now, the story of Blaisdon's 'New Elizabethans' is revealed, looking at those who have made Blaisdon home between 1964 and 2012," says Mr Waters.
The last volume revealed the great social changes that occurred in rural life as the countryside moved from an era of manual labour to mechanisation. The village was occupied by families who tended to have lived in the area, if not the village, for generations.
In 1964, the village lost its railway and village school while Blaisdon Hall's Salesian School changed in 1962 from an agricultural school to one caring for children with social problems. Village life was about to change again and this volume reflects a very different way of life.
At 432 pages and costing £25, the book is available from The Forest Bookshop in Coleford.
