RESIDENTS of a village near Monmouth have come together to save their landmark red phone box.

The old call box has been restored by villagers in Pen-y-Fan who spent hours renovating the 935 K6 call box, which had been commissioned to celebrate the silver jubilee of King George V, so it can be used as an information point.

During 2012 BT announced that the underused phone boxes in rural areas would be removed but made provision for Trellech United Community Council to adopt the British icon for £1.

Nick Brooks who organised the refurbishment said: "Being next to the Wye Valley Walk we hope it will be of help to the walkers using the route with extra information and at the same time assist visitors and delivery drivers in finding the house they are looking for."

The team behind the project also included John Lewis, Martin Parfeett, Pete Walters, and Rob Nelson.

Monmouth MP David Davies, who performed the official opening said: "I'm delighted to support this community effort to create something constructive from this good old fashioned icon, which looks impressive.

"For our children who have grown up with mobile phones, this is a way of preserving the past but with a new use for the 21st century."
