A GROUP of school students had the chance to hear the story of an ex-serviceman who lost his leg and who will later this year row the Atlantic.

The Year 10 pupils at Caldicot School also had the opportunity to question Nigel Rogoff who lost his leg in a parachuting display accident.

The visit to Caldicot was the 56-year-old former flight sergeant’s first as an ambassador for the national education charity SkillForce.

He spoke about his preparations as part of the team taking part in the Row2Recovery crossing of the Atlantic, the first by an all-amputee group, and about his computerised leg which cost £85,000.

The students are all taking part in the SkillForce educational programme called Onto Next Steps.

The programme focuses on character, self-confidence and resilience, and aims to help young people stay engaged in their studies and develop the teamwork and problem solving skills they need for education, work and life.
