AT a time when many village stores and post offices are fast disappearing, an old Aylburton brewery is being restored for just that purpose.

The stone building, beside the village's George Inn, will also make an annnexe for the inn with nine guest bedrooms.

"The work is quite exciting," said the building's owner, Anthony Baber. "For a long time now the stonework has been covered up with rendering and we have started to strip this off to reveal the original work.

"It has always been known as the Old Brewery but that isn't necessarily what it was – it is such an old building that it might have had several uses.

"We found some old windows quite low down which might be very old with newer work built on top."

He said builder Brian Morgan had been given the task of clearing up the outside over the next three or four weeks, and the inside changes would take a little longer.

And while it all goes on the George of course remains open with a welcoming pint and meal.
